Leutnant Gustl, an infantry subaltern garrisoned in Vienna, attends a concert. At the cloak-room on the way out he has an altercation with a civilian, who returns insult for insult, and prevents Gustl from drawing his sword. According to the rules, Gustl is now dishonoured and has only the alternatives of suicide or resignation from the army. Else A young Viennese woman vacationing at a luxurious spa receives a telegram from her mother that will forever change her destiny. Facing the unthinkable, a nineteen year-old woman must betray her own intuition and morals in an attempt to save her parents from financial ruin.
