It was in September 1944 that British paratroopers, men of the 1st Airborne division, were dropped well behind the German lines in Holland. Field Marshal Montgomery's plan, code-named "Market Garden" was to break through the German defenses at Arnhem and advance into Germany itself. But the British troops found they had parachuted into pure hell: turned on them in Arnhem was the firepower of tow Nazi panzer divisions. The British held out for nine nightmarish days as a gradually tightening ring of German infantry, tanks, self-propelled guns, mortars, and anti-aircraft guns closed in on small groups of the exhausted paratoopers.
