This report relates to the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, which brought about the final defeat and the conclusion of peace with the Creek Indian Nation by the Treaty of Fort Jackson of August 9, 1814. It is a comprehensive study of the physical characteristics of the terrain, the archaeological investigation of the battleground to date, and the importance of the Indian breastwork in the final outcome of the battle. The study devotes particular attention to the size of the breastwork, its location, and manner of construction. The data contained here provide valuable information concerning a significant but little known battle in the history of Indian warfare on the North American continent. Among the far reaching results was to open up large land areas in southeastern United States to exploration and settlement. Includes bibliography, battle maps, and sixteen illustrations.
