Republican attacks on the Wilson administration during 1917 and early 1918 had been half-hearted and largely abortive, but as the 1918 elections approached Republican forces gathered to launch an all-out assualt, aware that Wilson was becoming increasingly detached from domestic affairs. The result was one of the closest electoral finished in American history and is described this week by the author.
