The war was a turning point in the destinies of both the Jewish and Arab nations. Jewish nationalism like Arab nationalism became the pawn of Britain's power politics. A measure of sympathy and a large degree of self-interest extracted from the British government a pledge of support for 'the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people'. This declaration was intended to win the support of world Jewry for the Allied cause. It was to have a more profound and lasting effect than the British government had bargained for.
