On the night of May 14/15 three Austrian cruisers broke through the Otranto Barrage and proceeded to destroy one third of the drifters patrolling the nets. The Allies immediately struck back, but the engagement was 'conducted with singular lack of skill' and was to have considerable repercussions on U-Boat warfare in the Mediterranean.
