On April 16, 1917 it was apparent that Nivelle's offensive was yet another futile bloodbath. The next day there began a series of mutinies affecting two-thirds of all French divisions. Was this a revolutionary movement exemplified by the recent Russian Revolution, or simply a gesture of despair by the exhaulted and bitter piolus?
