In autumn 1915 there took place one of the more romantic episodes of the war: two specially armed naval motor boats were shipped from London to Cape Town, from where they made the hazardous 2,800-mile overland journey to Lake Tanganyika, surmounting innumerable difficulties before they eventually cleared the lake of German craft.
