In the 1880s Belgium had built a series of forts around Liege and along the Meuse to deter the Germans from marching through Belgium on their way to attack France. Faced with these forts in 1914, Ludenforff found his troops nervous at the prospect of having to storm the mighty bastions - but the German siege guns soon proved their worth.
