6 November 1961 the 57th Transportation Company (Lt Hel), Fort Lewis, Washington, and their twenty CH-21 helicopters began a deployment to Vietnam. On 22 December the men of the 57th, operating jointly with the 8th transportation Company, completed their first airmobile operation, carrying Vietnamese paratroopers into battle.
