To prevent the loss of targets of opportunity, which were often able to disperse before fire support arrived, the Army authorized the arming of O-1 Bird Dogs in Vietnam in 1968. Discussed in this article are the issues involved in the arming, types of armament, and successes of O-1 pilots when engaging the enemy.
