The author criticizes two concepts that he considers to be myths. The first myth is that the service academies should encourage creativity and innovation. Instead, according to the author, the schools exist to teach approved Army doctrine, thus resulting in a common body of knowledge for the officer corps. The other myth is that the 360-degree approach to performance evaluation, whereby subordinates, peers and supervisors all get to evaluate the performance of a manager. The author sees opportunity for abuse when a subordinate or peer has the ability to affect an officer's promotion, pay or future assignments.
