This article discusses the work of the Cargo Helicopters Project Office to "sustain the current fleet, extend the service life of the aging aircraft, and apply needed upgrades to ensure maintainability and battlefield cpmpatibility." Remanufacturing of the Chinook airframe will result in the CH-47F Improved Cargo Helicopter Service Life Extension Program (SLEP), which will bridge the gap to the Future Transport Rotorcraft (FTR). 300 CH-47Ds will be upgraded to extend their service lives until the FTR is available.
