The U.S. national interest in Colombia is based on four issues: economic interest, illegal migration, illegal narcotics, and Colombia's guerrilla insurgency. U.S. special operations forces could improve stability in Colombia by training the Colombian army and police to deal with drug traffickers, civilian paramilitary forces, and other abusers of human rights.
