Australia volunteered to take the lead in the UN peacekeeping operation in East Timor--International Force-East Timor (INTERFET)--in 1999. The United States established US Forces INTERFET to provide logistics, intelligence, communications, civil affairs, and operations and planning augmentees in support of the Australian forces. The Army provided most of the intelligence and communications assets and all of the civil affairs support.
