This article focuses on the Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD) mission and functions, and on several key programs of promising technology with near-term readiness implications and far-term air vehicle potential. The mission of the directorate is accomplished through inhouse studies, use of resources of academic institutions and commercial research organizations, close cooperation with other Government agencies, and contracts with aerospace industrial firms.
