When the editors of this volume were directed by general Bradley to prepare a permanent history of the 96th infantry division, they set about the job with a very specific purpose in mind. It was to write the story of the division for the men who fought its battles - to try to bring to them the whole picture in which each of them occupied so important a place. Secondarily, the purpose was to tell the story to the families of those men. Accordingly, the aim has been to write a narrative which would be readable but authentic, accurate but non- technical, and complete but not surfeited with tactical details - in other words, to steer a middle course between the superficiality of a yearbook or souvenir brochure and the ponderous profundity of an official military history. Above all, the aim has been to tell the story in terms of the individual men who fought the battles. -- From the preface (page xv)
