During the Civil War, John Hay worked as President Lincoln's assistant private secretary. With his colleague John G. Nicolay, he produced a ten volume history of Lincoln. This edition of his more private work includes unusual glimpses of Lincoln with his guard down. It begins in 1861 and continues through 1870, offering insights into the Civil War and the turbulent period of Reconstruction.
