Fort William was built in 1834; about 1841 it was replaced with an adobe fort and renamed Fort John, eventually being called Fort Laramie. In 1849 the trading fort became a military outpost until it was abandoned in 1890. The site is in Goshen County, Wyoming, across the Platte River from the town of Fort Laramie.
