This book is about the last great military assault of World War II, in which infantrymen's blood paid for their general’s headlines. In September 1944, one of the highest of the Allied commanders had confidently predicted that his men would easily “Bounce the Rhine”, the last remaining natural barrier on the way into Germany. After the wholesale slaughter of those troops, three more months would go by before another attempt would be made to cross. In all, nearly twenty major efforts were made to vault the moat of Hitler's Reich between September 1944 and April 1945. And when at last it was done- by boat, by the one remaining bridge, and by airborne operation- strategic considerations took second place to glory-seeking by the top brass. -- From the book jacket.
