The Civil War in the Trans-Mississippi region provides a fascinating study of Nineteenth Century warfare under the most severe conditions. Soldiers serving in the region faced an almost complete lack of a railroad net, a decrepit road system, and terrain that varied from arid deserts to rugged mountains. Battles were few, but the constant strain of living under less than ideal conditions wore heavily upon the soldiers serving west of the Mississippi River. Often the stories told by the frontier soldiers were not of great engagements, but of long marches, poor living conditions, or of simple survival. And for each story told there were always two parts, one told by a man in gray and other by one who wore blue ... In these volumes of the series only those pieces dealing with the Trans-Mississippi theater, and from the Southern point of view, will be presented -- Adapted from the introduction.
