The memoir of an African-American woman's journey from farm worker in the tobacco fields of North Carolina to the Pentagon as an Army general. It's about a girl turned woman who refused to be bound to the distinctions between men's work and women's work and traveled her own road to greatness as a military officer. Starting as an Army nurse, General Adams-Ender was the first woman to earn the Expert Field Medical Badge, became the leader of the Army Nurse Corps, and ended her Army career as the Commanding General at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
