Originally published in 1888, this is a first-person account of everyday life for the footsoldier in the U.S. Army of the late 19th century. Includes chapters on living quarters, foraging, wagon trains, offenses and punishments, equipment, transportation, food, and hospitals. John D. Billings served with the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War in both Sickles' Third and Hancock's Second Corps.
