Several weeks after the United States entered World War I in April 1917, the American Library Association began preparations for the world-wide distribution of library materials to American Soldiers. The Library War Service program would remain active long after the Armistice and the protracted demobilization. By 1920, the Association had mounted two financial campaigns and raised over $5,000,000 from public donations, secured Carnegie Corporation funds for the erection of thirty-six camp library buildings, distributed approximately 10,000,000 books and magazines, and provided library collections to nearly 5,000 locations. Although discharged in the summer of 1920, a number of war-related activities continued well into the postwar decade. -- from Preface by author.
