To address the need for ethical decision-making instruction [to new United States Army recruits], I, as the assigned chaplain, presented a class on Ethical Decision-Making to over 1600 lieutenants and captains at the Maneuver Support Center at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri between August 2005 and February 2009. Instruction focused on understanding how each person derives his or her ethical principles and on the ethical decision-making model as described by army regulations. It also gave the students a basic understanding of some of the major ethical theories as well as how to make ethical decisions in a combat environment, where killing may be required.
