The Korean War, one of the most bitter and inglorious, and yet least known, conflicts in history, is now brought powerfully to life in the words of the men who fought in it. For this book, author Donald Knox interviewed hundreds of veterans of Korea, from riflemen to commanding officers. By skillfully interweaving their personal stories with battalion and regimental records, he has created a day-by-day chronicle of the first seven months of the war. The result is far more than a descriptive military history, more than a traditional oral history; rather it is theater the theater of war. This story continues in the second volume where Knox determined that the gallantry and sacrifice in Korea be fixed in memory. For too many Americans the Korean War is a distant conflict, vaguely remembered or even forgotten. Yet the death toll for the U.S. servicemen in Korea over three years was virtually the same as in Vietnam over 10. The U.S. fought for the United Nations in the Korean War, a savage bloodbath, in mind scarring and seemingly endless struggle. When at last the survivors came home, their personal dramas remained untold, their gallantry unnoted. Until now.
