This book is a military not a political history, but the author has had to show how re-establishment of Allied authority was complicated by the impulse given to nationalist aspirations during the period of enemy control. It was further complicated by the fact that military administration had in some cases to be exercised by a British commander over the former colonies of allied Powers.
