At 0945 on September 16th a huge procession of transports and gliders began taking off from airfields in Britain for Operation Market Garden as it was called. 10,095 troops and 96 guns landed West of Arnhem. But of that huge total only 700 reached the bridge. And on September 21st the 9 officers and 140 men left of that 700 were forced back from the bridges those are end by a battle group of German Panzer grenadiers. They had held on days longer than was planned but the second army had not arrived to link up with them. During the night of September 25- 26th what was left of 1st Airborne Division withdrew across the Rhine. Operation Market Garden had failed. Why? Arnhem, a case study, explains why in a lucid and highly professional analysis.
