After the death of his mother, a young boy goes to his father, a man unaware of the boy's existence. The father has worked for twelve years on a jermal, a fishing platform in the middle of the sea. Unable to return the boy to the mainland, the father, supervisor of the fishing operation, allows him to stay as a worker. The boy must adjust to the harsh, isolated conditions, and both must learn to live with the connections the two share.
