Pashto is one of two official languages of Afghanistan and is also spoken in parts of Pakistan. This textbook offers a thematically organized, integrative approach to the Pashto language combined with current innovations in foreign language teaching. The innovations include an emphasis on integrated skills development, with a large number of the activities intended to develop strong speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. The texts and activities in the book provide sufficient materials to learn the language within a cultural context. Students using this book should already have a basic knowledge of Pashto with a high-introductory level of skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The elementary textbook by the same author (and published by GU Press) provides appropriate preparation for this one, but students may come to it after having used other resources widely offered on the market for English-speaking learners. The book is accompanied by a CD-ROM featuring over 100 audio files. Vocabulary lists for each chapter allow readers to hover over each word or phrase and hear it in both eastern and western dialects.
