Experts estimate there were more than 10,000 military engagements during the American Civil War, each one of them desperately important to the soldiers so engaged and the civilians nearby. Most of those engagements have passed from the national memory, but many local sites remain with some reminder of what must have been the best, or the worst day of millions of lives. Enthusiast Gelbert has found 1,538 of these sites across the US, including memorials for local soldiers who had to travel.
