"No station now garrisoned by troops of the United States Army has had a longer record of service to the nation than that of Old Point Comfort, on which Fort Monroe now stands. This point of land on the western shores of Chesapeake Bay has been regarded as an important spot, from a military point of view, for three and a quarter centuries, and it has been occupied more or less continuously by defensive works throughout that period. Other stations-particularly some of those which were established on the western plains-may have been of greater importance in local development and in the expansion of the United States toward their final boundaries, but none has been more important to the Army itself or has played a greater part in the development of the military efficiency of the nation."--from Chap. 1.
