This volume, based on uniquely interdisciplinary research undertaken by the Conservation of Human Resources Project staff, is devoted to seventy-nine case histories of soldiers who failed and the analyses of these histories. The cases have been selected primarily from the viewpoint of their suitability to illuminate a particular facet of the category schema that was developed to facilitate the systematic study of performance. One guiding consideration in their selection was the fullness of materials, particularly the follow-up data outlining the soldier's readjustment to civilian life. The central interest of the authors is in what the resulting analysis might contribute to deepening our knowledge of the factors contributing to effective performance. Most young Americans, faced with the challenge of war, performed well. Some, however, could not because of handicapped background, others because of errors in assignment made by the Army, and still others because they were overwhelmed by the military situation. These unusual and dramatic life histories represent a valuable record for all who are interested in the social history of the United States in our time.
