This paper discusses the results of a USCENTCOM conference discussing the Environmental Challenges in Central Asia and the Caspian Basin. This was the second environmental security conference for the Central Command areas of responsibility. It examined critical environmental issues of common interest bringing together senior military and civilian leaders from the Central Asia and the Caspian Basin states, international academics, the private sector, governmental and military subject matter experts, and the World Bank Group in an atmosphere of mutual cooperation and respect. It identified environmental threats to regional security and emphasized the importance of both military environmental stewardship and cooperative contingency planning in responding to these threats. .
