As he begins his last tour of duty before mandatory retirement, grizzled U.S. Marine Corps lifer "Gunny" Highway sees the bumpy road his life has taken become even more complicated. Highway is at once a leather-hided boot-camp traditionalist, going nose-to-nose with feisty new recruits; a battle-scarred Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, going eyeball-to-eyeball with officers whose knowledge of war comes from textbooks; and a closet romantic, going heart-to-heart with his ex-wife, hoping to rekindle their love with lines he's learned from Harper's bazaar and Cosmopolitan. Culminates as Highway leads his combat-ready platoon during the 1983 U.S. invasion of Grenada.
