Grenada 13 March 1979 staged a revolution of unimaginable significance, given Grenada's unimportance in international affairs. In 1974 Grenada gained its independence from the United Kingdom. Then the leftist New Jewel Movement seized power in a coup in 1979 and suspended the constitution. After a 1983 internal power struggle ended with the deposition and murder of revolutionary prime minister the United states invaded early on 25 October 1983. With victory within a few weeks the American and Caribbean governments quickly reaffirmed Grenada as part of the Commonwealth with Queen Elizabeth II as Grenada's lawful ruler.
