The British government authorized a risky and long-running operation to ship virtually its entire treasury across the treacherous waters to North American. Between 1938 and 1941 Britain sent more than three hundred top-secret shipments of gold and other financial securities to North American. It was this wealth that helped Britain buy the materials it needed for World War II. It also prevented these assets from falling into Nazi hands. It was this British wealth that sustained the Allied war effort until the U.S. Lend-Lease program took effect in 1941.
