"Forty-two years--1913 to 1955--how time flies. A good part of this time was in the two world wars as a combat commander; starting out as an enlisted man on the Mexican border in 1916 and climaxing by promotion to major general by General Douglas MacArthur in Manila. This promotion came about because my 'flying columns' of the famous 1st Cavalry Division were the first back to Manila liberating the 4000 starving Allies from the notorious Japanese internment camp at Santo Tomas University. I am proud of almost half a century of service as a soldier of my country. This is my story." -- From the author's introduction.
