"This volume features chapters excerpted from a forthcoming (2020) book length biography of Penobscot Indian Elder Charles Norman Shay of Indian Island, Maine. His full story, told partly in his own words, brings to light the mostly ignored or forgotten sacrifices made by North American Indian soldiers and their communities in WWII, the Korean War and Cold War. These sample chapters chronicle "D-Day"--The beginning of the Allied invasion of Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944. The focus is Shay's baptism by fire as a 19-year-old combat medic awarded a Silver Star for gallantry as part of a first-wave assault platoon on Omaha Beach. Woven into the narrative are emblematic stories of other Indian veterans who participated in the invasion, which, 75 years later, is still the largest amphibious and airborne assault in world history"--Back cover
