"At the request of the Office, Chief of Ordnance, three Soviet HVAP-T projectiles, 45mm, 57mm and 85mm in size, were submitted to this Arsenal by Picatinny Arsenal for a metallurgical examination. The metallurgical examination of the tungsten carbide cores, which was conducted by A. Burghardt in a separate study, is incorporated in Appendix A to this report. The projectiles were subjected to a visual examination to obtain significant identification markings and design features after which a detailed dimension drawing of each was prepared. The projectiles were then disassembled and metallurgical tests conducted on their components as follows: chemical analyses, hardness surveys, macroetch tests, microscopic examination, and tensile tests whenever possible."
