"The Field Service Division of the Army Weapons Command encountered a problem concerning firing residue build up in the M14 Rifle, M60 Machine Gun and the M73 Machine Gun when blank ammunition was used for training services. The firing residues and deposits accumulated on the weapons so that eventually their firing rates became sluggish, they failed to fire, failed to feed or developed other malfunctions. In subsequent cleaning assignments the currently recommended cleaners and cleaning procedures did not satisfactorily clean the weapons. This obviously shortened the time before residue build up during firing would again cause the weapon to become inoperable. A program of investigation was planned to determine the nature and cause of the residue, how rapidly it developed, what parts of the weapon were most seriously affected, to what extent currently recommended and existing cleaners would remove the deposit and whether a satisfactory procedure could be recommended for use in the field."--Page 1.
