From the 1988 annual historical review, Chapter One, Organization and Management: In 1988, Fort Leonard Wood and the Engineer School continued the process of change occasioned by the relocation of the School from Fort Belvoir to Leonard Wood. The consolidation of Engineer education and training which will be complete at the end of 1989 and early 1990, will mark the first time that Engineers have had a single home in 50 years. With the establishment of the Engineer Replacement Training Center at Fort Leonard Wood in 1940, the training of combat engineers was fragmented. Through the years most officer and NCO instruction was at Belvoir, while the bulk of the enlisted training occurred at Leonard Wood. Fort Leonard Wood also had the responsibility of basic training. The relocation has not significantly changed the training center's organization or that of the Engineer School as separate entities. The consolidation will result in annual savings of approximately $23 million.
