The purpose of this reader is to assist the intermediate student of Amharic in bridging the gap which exists between the exercises of the standard elementary textbooks and the type of text which appears in current newspapers. The base of the reader consists of fifty Amharic newspaper selections together with sufficient lexical and grammatical aids to enable the student to achieve an adequate comprehension of them. The initial selections are quite short and relatively simple, but as length and complexity gradually increase, the selections are subdivided into sections. Each selection is accompanied by an individual vocabulary and, where necessary, grammatical notes.
