From 1968's Section II: Summary of Post Activities and Historical Highlights (page 21): On 7 April 1968, units of Fort Bragg, commanded by Lieutenant General Robert H. York, were deployed to Baltimore, Maryland, to assist in the civil disturbances that occurred there after the death of Dr. Martin Luther King. Using that knowledge and experiences gained from previous disturbances, the Post units were able to assist the local authorities in putting down the riots and returned to Fort Bragg on 13 April 1968. During the period of 6-8 April 1968, Post units were also deployed to Washington, D.C., to handle the civil disturbances there. During the year various Post units were activated and sent to Vietnam. In February 1968 President Lyndon B. Johnson paid a surprise visit to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to see the 3d Brigade of the 82d Airborne Division depart for Vietnam. The 197th Artillery was also deployed for Vietnam during the year.
