Beginning late April 1943 the US II Corps began operations to break the northern portion of the German defense in Tunisia. As part of the II(US) Corps, 1st Armored's infantry seized the southern high ground in the vicinity of Oued Tine. By clearing the Tine Valley the Division was able to drive to Mateur, the key to communications in the Bizerte area. Following success there, it became the southern enveloping force in the attack against Bizerte, the key German port. When Bizerte fell, all resistance in Tunisia ended.
