From the 1986 annual historical review's Preface: This Annual Historical Review (AHR) is a narrative account of the mission, organization, staffing, and significant activities of the U.S. Army Chemical Research, Development and Engineering Center (CRDEC), Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), MD, for FY86 (1 October 1985 - 30 September 1986. The AHR serves as the corporate memory for CRDEC and should be used to guide current and future operations. In addition, the AHR is an excellent source for orienting new personnel to CRDEC's mission, organization, and recent activities. -- From the 1986 annual historical review's Chapter 1. Mission and Command Highlights (page 1-3): Effective 26 March 1986, the name U.S. Army Chemical Research and Development Center was changed to U.S. Army Chemical Research, Development and Engineering Center (CRDEC). The name was changed to reflect CRDEC's commitment to serve as the Department of Defense lead laboratory for chemical matters and as the life cycle manager, from initial research and development concepts to issue to field soldiers, for all chemical protective and defensive systems and equipment. From the 1984 annual historical review's Preface: This Annual Historical Review (AHR) is a narrative account of the mission, organization, staffing, and significant activities of the U.S. Army Chemical Research and Development Center (CRDC), Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD, from 1 July 1983 - 30 September 1984. The AHR serves as the corporate memory for CRDC and should be used to guide current and future operations. In addition, the AHR is an excellent source for orienting new personnel to CRDC's mission, organization, and recent activities. This is the first AHR for CRDC. With the creation of the U.S. Army Armament, Munitions and Chemical Command (AMCCOM), Rock Island, IL on 1 July 1983, the AMCCOM Historical Office became responsible for covering the activities of both CRDC and the U.S. Armament Research and Development Center (ARDC), Dover, NJ. To accomplish this expanded mission, the Historical Office established new field offices at each of these commands and assigned them the responsibility of preparing separate volumes of the AMCCOM AHR for CRDC and ARDC. The Historical Office (A) at Edgewood Area, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD, was assigned the task of covering the closeout of the old Chemical Systems Laboratory and the creation of CRDC. -- From Chapter 1. Mission and Command Highlights (page 1): CRDC is the U.S. Army's lead laboratory for research, development, and engineering in the areas of chemical defensive and protective systems and is a major subordinate activity of the U.S. Army Armament, Munitions and Chemical Command (AMCCOM) headquartered at Rock Island, IL.
