In an attempt to gain more effective air support for the IV Corps and to gain closer coordination between air and ground forces, a conference was held at IV Corps Command Post on 19 June 1944, between the Air Support Control Officer, Fifth Army, and G-3, IV Corps. The decision was made to attempt to further improve on the experience gained in the breakthrough to Rome, when a ground forward controller was used to direct supporting planes, by use of an airborne controller.
