Men, guns, airplanes, shipping, food- these are the essentials of war. Military success depends on using them in the proper quantities and in proper relationship to one another. The ration developed in the European Theater of Operations saves thousands of tons of shipping each year and at the same time is fully equal, if not superior, to the U.S. Army ration in other parts of the globe. Good cooking and attractive serving are indispensable to the excellence of the ETO ration. And only an empty garbage can in every mess - a complete elimination of waste - makes possible the ETO ration's economy of food. Daily attention to good mess management and especially to food conservation brings more men, more guns and more airplanes against the enemy. It assists in feeding our allies. It perceptibly shortens the war. Soon it will help feed the hungry people of the world.
