Owing to the number and weight of vehicles which have to be landed on beaches in amphibious operations, it has been found that some form of beach roadway is necessary to enable them to negotiate certain types of surfaces without becoming bogged. To meet this requirement, a comprehensive series of trials has been carried out at the Combined Operations Experimental Establishment, in order to develop roadways suitable for use on all types of beaches. This bulletin consists of an analysis of the trials and has been prepared with the following objects: to compare the merits of the various types of roadways tested and to make recommendations on their relative qualities for use on sand and on mud; to give details of a very light roadway developed specifically for jeeps; and to describe the Infantry Mud Mat- a device which has proved most satisfactory in limited prototype trials.
