This volume contains the transcript of proceedings of the first annual US Army War College Art of War Symposium. The symposium took place from 26 to 30 March 1984 at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. The five day-long symposium sessions focused on the planning and conduct of four Soviet offensive operations which occurred during the period December 1942 to August 1943. Symposium presentations analyzed the four operations from both the Soviet and German perspective. We devoted a full day to the study of each operation. The presentations included an overview of each operation based on Soviet sources and verified by German archival materials and individual presentations by German officers most of whom participated in the operations studied. This transcript should be read in conjunction with the symposium map studies which are included under separate cover.
